ShieldFive Help

File limits, quotas, and performance

Understand ShieldFive's limits and get the best performance when working with encrypted files.

What's the maximum file size?

ShieldFive supports files up to 10 TB (terabytes) per individual file. Files are automatically split into optimized chunks during upload to ensure reliability, even for very large files.

How does the monthly transfer quota work?

Each plan includes a monthly bandwidth allowance:

  • Counts both uploads and downloads
  • Resets every 30 days from when you started using ShieldFive
  • Shared file downloads count against your quota
  • View your current usage in Settings → Billing

When you exceed your quota, uploads and downloads are blocked until either your quota resets or you upgrade your plan.

Are there per-file download limits?

Download limits vary by plan:

  • Free plan: 20 downloads per file (for your own files)

  • Paid plans: Unlimited downloads for your own files

  • Share links: You can set custom download limits (up to 500) or leave unlimited

What rate limits apply?

To ensure reliable service for everyone:

  • Most operations: 10 requests per minute (uploads, downloads, folder operations)

  • Share link access: 5 attempts per minute per IP address

If you hit a rate limit, wait one minute before trying again.

Why should I keep my browser tab open during encryption?

File encryption happens entirely in your browser for security:

  • Large files can take several minutes to encrypt
  • Switching tabs or minimizing may slow down the process
  • The progress bar shows real-time status
  • Don't close the tab until encryption and upload are complete

On slower devices or with very large files, keep the tab focused for best performance.

Do download links expire?

Yes. All download links are single-use and time-limited:

  • Valid only for the specific file
  • Expire after one successful download
  • Cannot be shared or reused
  • New links are generated automatically when needed

This security measure ensures only authorized users can access files.

How does file deletion affect performance?

ShieldFive uses a two-step deletion process:

  • Move to Bin: Fast (only updates metadata)

  • Permanent delete: Removes the encrypted file from storage (may take a few seconds for large files)

Deleted files immediately free up storage quota, even if the physical deletion takes a moment to complete.
