Getting started with ShieldFive

ShieldFive provides zero-knowledge encrypted cloud storage. Your files are encrypted in your browser before upload, ensuring complete privacy.

How do I create an account?

Click "Get started" on the homepage to access the sign-up form. You'll need to provide an email address and create a password (minimum 6 characters). After signing up, you'll be redirected to your secure file dashboard once you verify your email and sign in.

When can I upload encrypted files?

Before uploading your first file, we recommend two quick steps:

  • Review the onboarding checklist: A quick reminder that ShieldFive cannot recover lost passphrases.

  • Verify your email address: Check your inbox for a verification email and click the confirmation link.

Email verification is required. The checklist is optional but recommended.

Do I need a vault master key?

A vault master key is optional but recommended. It allows you to use one passphrase across all your uploads, making file management easier. By default, the key stays only in memory and is cleared when you close the tab or sign out. You'll re-enter it when needed. If you prefer, you can use a unique passphrase for each file instead.

How do I encrypt and upload a file?

From your Files dashboard, click to open the "Secure File Encryption" modal. Select "Encrypt and Upload to Vault," set your passphrase (or use your vault master key), and review the key-safety checklist if prompted. Keep your browser tab open while the file encrypts and uploads. All encryption happens locally in your browser before the file reaches our servers.

Can ShieldFive recover or reset my passphrases?

No. This is critical to understand. ShieldFive cannot recover lost passphrases. Your unwrapped vault keys stay on your device; for protected share links, passwords are verified server-side over HTTPS and stored as hashes. Always store your passphrases in a secure password manager or write them down offline. Never share passphrases in the same message as share links.

How long do sessions stay active?

You'll remain signed in even after closing your browser tab. To sign out, use the sign-out option in your account menu. Once signed out, you'll need to sign in again to access your files, folders, and settings.

What if I skip onboarding?

You can skip it, but we strongly recommend reviewing the checklist before your first upload. It’s a quick reminder that passphrases can’t be recovered.
